    Why DMV Homeowners Buy Generators

Pepco, BGE, and Dominion are reliable most of the time — but the storms that knock the DMV out (derechos, ice storms, hurricane remnants) can take days to recover from. If you have a basement sump pump, a home office, medical equipment, or a young family, a standby generator buys you peace of mind.

    Standby vs. Portable

Most of the standby generators we install are Generac whole-home units, paired primarily with 200A or 400A residential services. The generator sits permanently outside, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself within seconds of an outage via an automatic transfer switch. Higher upfront cost than a portable, but it just works.

A portable generator with an inlet box and manual transfer switch is the budget-friendly path: you store a portable unit, roll it out during outages, plug into the inlet, and flip pre-selected circuits to generator power. Cheaper, but requires you to be home and willing to deal with fuel.

    What's in a Full Install

We handle everything electrical for a Generac standby install: ATS install, sub-panel or whole-home transfer setup, generator service circuit on a 200A or 400A service, low-voltage signal wiring, load calc, and permit. Gas line work goes to a licensed gas plumber we coordinate with — we don't pretend to be a one-stop shop on gas.

    Sizing the Generator Correctly

Undersized generators short-cycle and shut down under load. Oversized generators waste money. We do a real load calc — A/C compressors, sump pumps, well pumps, electric dryers, EV chargers — before recommending a unit.
